Houston police are investigating the causes of a roadside death in the area last weekend.
According to a news release from the Houston Police Department, officers responded to the 12000 block of Northwest Freeway just after 1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, when the driver of an 18-wheeler told police he pulled over on the side of the road after feeling an impact from the back of his trailer.
HPD said the driver told police he was driving in the middle lanes of the freeway when he felt the impact before his brakes began to lock up. After pulling over, the driver then saw a white Chevy van burning, according to police.
The person inside the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was questioned at the scene and released, according to HPD.
HPD spokesperson Victor Senties said it is unclear whether the 18-wheeler was involved in an accident or only witnessed the van catching fire. He said the department’s Vehicular Crimes division is in the process of determining any fault, which could involve speaking with potential witnesses or recreating the accident.
