A fire that started underneath a pedestrian bridge in the Heights on Wednesday morning has caused the temporary closure of part of the MKT/Heights Hike-and-Bike Trail, according to a social media post by the Houston Parks Board.
The Houston Fire Department said on Twitter that it had 10 units on the scene to battle the blaze, which sparked underneath the trail bridge where crosses White Oak Bayou. It is a wooded area north of Interstate 10, east of East 5th Street and south of Frazier Street.
“We encourage trail users to avoid the area until further notice,” the Houston Parks Board said in a Wednesday afternoon Facebook post. “We will share detour information and updates on our website and social media pages as more information becomes available.”
The initial tweet from HFD said its arson unit was investigating the cause of the fire. A subsequent tweet by the fire department said one of its arson investigators was transported to a hospital after becoming dehydrated at the scene.
