Visionary Heights, a nonprofit, spent five years catering to both musical and visual artists at its Nicholson Street location. Artwork hung on the walls and a small live concert would be put on once or twice a month along with a monthly gathering of locals who played music together.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic making in-person events infeasible, the organization had to relinquish the Heights space in July.
“Since we wouldn’t be able to continue the art portion, we tried figure out how to continue the music,” said Ed Amash, the new director for the organization.
In focusing on the music, Visionary Heights changed its name to Song Circle Houston.
Song Circle Houston’s vision is to inspire self-expression through music. It hopes to encourage the craft in participants through mentorship and education.
While it is without a permanent location, the organization hope to find a new home through a partnership in the Heights. In the meantime, the first in-person event will be The Gatherin’, a gathering of people sharing their music on Oct. 18.
“It’s an outlet for folks to share their creativity,” Amash said.
When held at the Nicholson location, The Gatherin’ was a gathering of 12-25 musicians who would take turns sharing their songs. Poets and storytellers have also participated. On Oct. 18, the event will be slightly different.
“People bring themselves, their instrument and a chair and we will get into groups of 10,” Amash said.
The event doesn’t yet have a location, but Amash said they are looking to have it at a local park or brewery. The location will be announced on its Facebook page (@VisionaryHeights) within the next few weeks. The group will keep its previous schedule of meeting on the third Sunday of every month.
“We always welcome new members,” Amash said. “We’re a place where people can feel comfortable sharing their music. That’s the spirit of what we’re trying to do.”
Amash said the organization hopes to bring back live concerts and visual art once it has a permanent location. Anyone who could help Song Circle Houston find a new space can contact them at email@example.com.
